Cell Phones

Nancy asked if any of us would be taking a cell phone (or renting or whatever). Do any of you have a GSM phone? It might be nice to have a phone among us for the trip. Over on Cruise Critic they recommended buying a phone from Mobal Rental It is $49 plus charge for minutes. I have not looked at the details yet.

Any ideas?

Okay, Carol found some other information about cell phones and using them internationally:

Yes, I had thought about a phone too. I know that Ted always is able to use his in Europe somehow, but he has T-Mobile which I know is what alot of people to travel oversees seem to have. I am eligible for a new phone this spring so maybe I will see what that involves to have it work there. I don't, however, think that Verison is so good that way so maybe the $49 thing is a good idea. I think Lesley may have a phone that works there, but I am not sure. I'll ask her.

I finally had the time to look at this web site. It seems like something that we might do. I looked at the rates for using it in Italy. It is about (of course I already cannot remember all the rates!) $1.25 minute for incoming calls, and then slightly increased for other types of calls. While it is not the kind of thing you would just be chatting away on, it might come in handy if you are up for paying the charges. It sounds like maybe you give your credit card and are charged to just the calls you make. They have a place you can put in all the different countries and it tells the charges which is good to know in advance.

Someone on Cruise Critic said that if you have the right phone (on a GSM network) and get the SIM changed (??) you can be charged only a few cents a minute. I am not sure about that whole changing the SIM thing, but maybe it is not that hard. Of course the whole point is that you have to have a phone with a monthly charge at home that will work in Europe. GSM coverage in California is spottier than the coverage we have for Verizon and as we saw today that can be rather annoying as it is!
