It looks like it is easy to take the train from Civitavecchia to Rome. There is an entire thread here on the Cruise Critic boards and also Carol got similar advice from her friend Joann. This would be particularly easy if we are not traveling with lots of stuff. It looks like it actually takes less time on the train than if we are driving. Here is a link to a step by step how-to on taking the train from Civitavecchia. It only costs about 11 euros (roundtrip?). On the other hand, I wonder how crowded it gets?
If all we want is transportation to Rome this might be a good time to get on the cruise bus with everyone else (no tour just transport which in itself is advertised from Celebrity as $74 (US dollars) per person).
Or we might want to have a private tour that takes us to Rome on the first day and shows us "everything", then the second day we do it on our own. This will also depend on whether we spend the night in Rome or on the ship.
Note: Carol found a link to a private limo service in Rome (I am moving that post here so we can keep them all together). kay t 12/6/07

Rome Transportation To

I like the idea of the train, but it is true that we could do one day by ship tour bus (or transport bus) and then go by train the next. However, I wonder if it would be better the other way around since the ship does LEAVE on the second day! I really like the idea of staying over night, but could go either way. So is it 74 euros just for the ride into Rome from the ship? I assume that is round trip. I took a new Travel and Leisure from my doctor's office because it had a long article about Rome in it. I do feel kind of bad, but there were lots and lots of good mags so it was not as bad. Right????
I forgive you for your theft. It would be great if we spend the night, we could take the train in and out and spend out 74 euros (each) on a room! I really want to try to stay at the Hotel Raphael - it is this fancy-ish place Keith and I saw when we were there. Great location. It was on that venere.com also (400 euros per night).
If we have to go in both days we could trade off and go one way one day and another the other. I can't believe that the private limo would be too expensive versus the ship bus (just the bus, no tour involved in the 74 euro trip). I was thinking a private tour for one day, train the next to see things we missed the first day. Of course there is that being left behind thing.
I finally got a chance to look at the guys site showing the way to go on the train to Roma. Boy! Could you be more organized? It seemed like he knew he was going to post it before he even did it! Anyway, what a great bit of info. Can be print it out? This is exactly what we needed.
